Walking
North and South Uist boast spectacular walking routes — from endless coastal trails along the machair and beaches to hillside and mountain paths with awe-inspiring views across the sea lochs. Two of the finest walks begin just moments from Beacon Light, both part of the renowned Hebridean Way. A climb up Eaval rewards walkers with panoramic views across the islands, the Minch, and even the Cuillin Hills of Skye.
Fishing & Shooting
North Uist Estate, within which Beacon Light is located, offers exceptional Salmon and Sea Trout fishing from May to October, with over 700 fishable lochs to explore. Wild Brown Trout are plentiful and provide fantastic sport, while Deer stalking and Wildfowling can also be arranged. Ghillies are available via the Lochmaddy Hotel, and nearby South Uist and Benbecula also offer excellent fishing opportunities.
Beaches
The island’s beaches are among the most unspoilt in the world — mile after mile of pristine white sand and turquoise waters. Directions to several of our favourites are provided in the house information pack. For the adventurous, the beaches also offer kite surfing, windsurfing, and kayaking, though many visitors prefer to simply enjoy the peace and beauty of these untouched coastal stretches.
Historical Sites
North Uist is rich in archaeological treasures, many untouched and open to explore. Nearby, the Neolithic Burial Tomb at Bharpa and the Stone Circle at Pobull Phinn offer fascinating glimpses into ancient island life. The Art Gallery and Museum in Lochmaddy provides an inspiring collection of local art, history, and delicious home-baked treats.
Nature Watching
From the granite and glass extension at Beacon Light, you can often spot Sea Eagles, Golden Eagles, Hen Harriers, Otters, and Seals without leaving the house. Red Deer are frequently seen across the loch and occasionally swim past at dusk — a truly magical sight in this wild and tranquil setting.
Machair
In spring and early summer the Machair will come alive with an array of colour from the wild flowers that appear every year. Walking through the Machair in spring and seeing the sea through white cliffs of sand is unique to North Uist.
St Kilda
Take a fast boat to the world heritage site to St Kilda (2 hours) and explore the Island or even Scuba Dive. The boat trip which incorporates the 3 Stacs of St Kilda was the highlight of my trip there. There are still Soay Sheep on one of them when the island was abandoned in the 1930s
Wildlife
The island feels like a living nature reserve, home to Corncrakes, Sea Eagles, Golden Eagles, Hen Harriers, and Short-Eared Owls. The Balranald Nature Reserve, just 15 minutes away, offers excellent walking trails and the chance to experience North Uist’s unique flora and fauna. Otters are often seen along the shoreline in front of Beacon Light — sometimes daily.

Beacon Light is a large stunning grand designs type house built on 3 levels with an architectural glass and granite addition to an original Dualchas designed house. The new part of the house has 2 glass walls and 2 granite walls inside with corridors that have glass ceilings to let the light filter into them with stunning lighting. The way the granite and glass house is joined to the original Dulchas house is a feature and a very clever design by the architect.
Our Location
Beacon Light sits within 7 metres of Loch Euphort in a quiet location in Locheport. It sits above the loch and overlooks 10 miles of wilderness where a huge variety of wildlife can be seen in the loch and beyond.
